SISTER MURIEL'S CAUSE

Sister Muriel Grisler is a Sister of the Cenacle. Her provincial is located here in Chicago. The mission of the Cenacle Sisters is to “work for the transformation of the world by awakening and deepening faith, with and for the people of our time.” After forty years of religious life, Sister went to Medjugorje to deepen her prayer life.

Since 1993, she has been working with the refugees in Bosnia. She operates in the outlying villages bringing food packages consisting of oil, corn meal, dry beans, rice, barley, sugar, soup and canned meat. The refugees she serves are old, sick, poor and destitute. The stench of their bombed-out homes is horrible, often containing human waste on the floor. During the winter months, they spend most of their time in bed trying to keep warm. They do not bathe themselves. They dress in layers of clothes.

On my last two trips, I was privileged to spend the better part of a day working along side Sister. The refugees shriek for joy when she announces her presence—loudly calling out so as not to frighten them. They pray with her and she prays for them. They embrace her and weep over the concern, love and hope she brings them. She has 450 homes that she visits at least once every month. Sister is in the process of building a nursing home in the Ljubuski area near Medjugorje. The Sisters of Mercy of St. Vincent de Paul, a local religious order, have signed an agreement to operate the home.

Sister says that today some things seem impossible to accomplish. She has shared moments of joy and sorrow. She recognizes these joys and sorrow as strengthening her faith. She has turned to Our Blessed Mother for comfort, love and strength. It is Our Mother that leads us to Her Son who in turn will guide us to the Father. The dream of a nursing home for these elderly destitutes is slowly becoming a reality. Sister Muriel is living the gospels.
